Every second there are new slides with tons of information, the lecturer is turning away while talking… seems real, doesn't it?
During this workshop we will discover the differences between a good and a bad speaker and develop the basics of rhetoric, which start long time before the actual speech.

Presentation for tomorrow - done, getting the new book by P.M. - done, answering mails - tomorrow, Tina's present - forgotten…
You have loads of things to do and time is precious. From time to time "to-dos" get delayed more than they should and some get even lost ... Have you ever experienced anything like this?
In this workshop we will explore the time management method "Getting things done" combined with other techniques in order to use your time more efficiently and stay relaxed.

Workshop 1.4
"Future challenge: taking care of the growing population of elderly" (By the Leyden Academy)

In this workshop, students will be challenged to think about aging in a new way. Are we continuing to get older and older? Is there a limit to this trend? What will the future of medicine look like? What are ways to take care of the ever increasing population of elderly? Is the current specialist-based medicine in the 21st century ready to take care of the growing group of elderly patients with multiple diseases at the same time? The workshop focuses on both the clinical aspects of the care and the political/societal aspects of this challenge. Students are encouraged to bring out their views and share the experiences in their countries. Medical students of today are responsible for improving healthcare strategies in the future. Let's start today so we can live a long and happily ever after...!

paper, as well as how to avoid typical pitfalls and mistakes.  We will
do this by looking at the most important part of a scientific paper,
the abstract, and showing how it relates to the scientific paper as a
whole.  Contents, structure, and style will be examined and practiced.

"WHS – Workshop: Challenges in Modern Medical Education – Preparing tomorrow´s Physicians" (by Berlin Medical Student Association FSI, project group teaching and curriculum)

Today we are confronted with globalization and staggeringly rapid
scientific progress leading to increasing specialization – notably in
medical professions. These developments pose new challenges for modern
medical education. To keep up, we have to examine what knowledge and
skills physicians need day-to-day. Once we know the “what”, it leads us to
the question of “how” – new ways of learning and teaching must be
developed and established concepts evaluated and improved.
Together we will examine different approaches to medical education and
compare solutions from different countries and traditions: What elements
do we need? In what directions should reforms move? What prepares future
graduates best to cope with the demands of the medical profession in the
years ahead?

DAY 3 - Tuesday 06/10/2009 17:30- 19:00 pm

Workshop 3.1
"Clinical Examination of the Respiratory and Cardiovascular System" (by medical skills training centre, TÄF Berlin)

The workshop will include the clinical examination of another workshop participant and subsequently pathological sounds from each system will be practiced on "SAM" (Student Auscultation Manikin).

Workshop 3.2
"Workshop of the Drug Information Association (DIA)"

DIA is a professional association of more than 18,000 members worldwide who are involved in discovery, development, regulation, surveillance, or marketing of biopharmaceutical products. In this workshop alternative fields for students trained in medicine will be introduced.

Workshop 3.3
"Interview Training" (by Deutsche Ärztefinanz,) in German language only

To find a job in the hospital is not always easy. There are many applicants for few places. The question is: why should they pick you?
This workshop is offering you strategies to succeed in your application. Based on national surveys on leading physicians we will prepare little role plays. Here you can train everything – starting from the first phone call to your job interview.

Workshop 3.4
"Hands-On Workshop Anesthesiology" (by Department of Anesthesiology,Charité )

Broaden your skills of Emergency Medicine using a using a high-fidelity patient simulator! And learn more about Airway Management and Basic Life Support from the doctors of the Charité.

Workshop 3.5

Speed Dating for Researchers

Speed Dating for Researchers enables you to find your perfect lab

partner! You have the same techniques, similar methodologies, and you

use the same type of cells. You two are the perfect match! Maybe you

also have equipment that you can share? Then it is obvious, that your

names will end up next to each other on a publication. Maybe you will

get a pet in the future, a lab-mouse called /et al./ Enjoy your dates

Workshop 3.6
"WHS – Workshop: Paul Ehrlich's immunology and the persistence  of concepts in medicine" (by Amin Turki)

Nowadays the Art of Medicine seems to be set in the field of Science. In Germany for instance, students do not study for their philosophicum as they used to do it in the old days but for their physicum. Humanities and Medicine share a long common history. It is generally known that in the Antique and Medieval Past the role of the doctor has been transformed from the ancient role of the healer to the one of the scholar that is equally capable in Latin as in the practice of the cure.
This general frame is widely known but the strong historical contingency of Medicine does not only translate into medical education but also into its current practice.
In this workshop we would like to address the question what kind of profit it might be that the practice and theory of Medicine can take from the broad field of the Humanities. We would like to explore the role that the Humanities might have in clinical practice. Together we will try to develop a presentation as a preliminary result that is supposed to be shared with the other participants of the ESC.

DAY 4 - Wednesday 07/10/2009, 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Workshop 4.5
"Zen and the art of presenting your paper" (by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Dirnagl)

Presentation skills can be learned! In my seminar I will review the basic principles of how to communicate scientific results to an audience. The good news is that these principles are simple, the bad news is that most speakers ignore them. Say it plain and simple! Explain why you did what! The 1 minute rule: No more than 1 slide per minute! Use sensory physiology for colours and fonts! Deliver a take home message: What´s your story? Practice your talk and learn from your and other´s mistakes! These are the principles that we will discuss, so that your next talk will pass the acid test: At the end of a good presentation everyone in the audience should be able to summarize your talk, even your little brother!

Workshop 4.6 "Go Abroad, Research in Other Countries" (by International Federation of Medical Student's Associations (IFMSA))

IFMSA seeks to give medical students across the world the opportunity to experience medical training in other countries. All exchanges are initiated and coordinated entirely by medical students. The aim of our program is to train both culturally sensitive students and skilled researchers intent on shaping the world of science in the upcoming future.

Join our Workshop to learn about the opportunities our system offers. Get information about the activities in your country and learn how to engage yourself. Exchange your experiences and help us improve the program to enable students all over the world to enrich their medical education.
